Mobile Phone Scam Alert 23 November 2018

Port Hope Police Service is warning residents to be wary of a scam utilizing mobile devices.  On the 21st of November a Port Hope resident received a text message to her mobile phone purporting to be from Scotia Bank indicating her account has been compromised and to go to a web site to receive more information.  The resident did not go to the web site and deleted the text.  This is a common phishing scam and if someone does go to the web site there could be a virus down loaded or they would request personal financial information.  Financial Institutions do not text fraud alerts to mobile phones.  If information is received and there is some question on whether it is legitimate or not Police suggest residents to contact their financial institution before proceeding.
