Bear Sighting in Port Hope – Public Safety Advisory
Port Hope Police are advising the community that a bear has been sighted within the municipality. While there have been no reports of aggressive behaviour, residents are urged to take precautions and remain aware of their surroundings.
If you see a bear in the area, do not approach it. Contact Port Hope Police or the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.
Please consider the following safety tips if you encounter a bear:
- Do not feed bears – intentionally or unintentionally. Secure garbage, compost, pet food, and bird seed indoors or in bear-resistant containers.
- Keep pets leashed and under control at all times.
- If you encounter a bear, remain calm, back away slowly, and give the bear space to leave.
- Never run from a bear, as this may trigger a chase response.
