Port Hope Police Lay Charges for Illegal Fishing

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, Port Hope Police officers were dispatched to the Ganaraska River following reports of individuals attempting to net fish within the designated fish sanctuary area, located north of the Molson Street bridge.

Upon arrival, officers observed two males actively trying to net fish near the fish ladder. When approached, the individuals attempted to leave the area and were later located in a vehicle nearby. Officers confirmed that the males were the same individuals previously observed in the sanctuary, with clothing consistent with having been in the river.

The individuals were initially uncooperative but eventually identified themselves to police. It was confirmed that neither possessed a valid fishing license.

As a result, four Provincial Offence Notices (PONs) were issued for:

  • Fishing without a license

  • Fishing during closed time (Sanctuary)

Port Hope Police remind residents and visitors that fishing within the sanctuary area north of Molson Street bridge is strictly prohibited and is an enforceable offence under provincial regulations. The fish sanctuary is in place to protect spawning fish populations and ensure conservation for future generations.
