Impaired Driver

On Saturday, August 20th at approximately 1:02am, while on general patrol, Port Hope Police Officers were traveling westbound on Walton street when they noticed a small pick-up truck sitting at a green light. The driver was talking to someone outside the driver side window, it appeared that the male individual was arguing with the driver. Officers noticed the vehicle had no exterior lighting illuminated. The vehicle then proceeded westbound on Walton Street and made a left turn heading south on John Street, without signaling and still without any exterior lighting.

The officer activated the emergency lights signaling the driver to pull over, the driver continued down John Street and the officer proceeded to activate his siren to get the drivers attention. The vehicle then came to an abrupt stop. When the male was asked for his driver’s license the driver provided a Passport. Officers detected the strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath as well as coming from the interior of the vehicle. The Officer asked the driver if he has had anything to drink this evening to which he stated "yes I have".

The driver was then arrested and taken back to the station. Once at the station, the driver refused to provide a breath sample. The driver was charged with Adult Operation while Impaired – alcohol and drugs, Adult Failure or refusal to comply with demand and Adult Driving while under Suspension. He was released on an undertaking with a court date in September.

Stolen Truck Recovered

On Saturday August 20th, while on general patrol, Port Hope Police observed a U-Haul truck parked on the north side of Croft Street matching a description of a vehicle reported stolen that was learned from information received from Cobourg Police.

The vehicle was found to be stolen out of Scarborough. The vehicle was observed parked, unoccupied and without any keys for the ignition. The driver’s door was unlocked while the passenger door was locked. The back door was also unlocked and was searched to determine no one was inside.

The Officer confirmed with U-Haul that the truck had been reported as stolen with Toronto Police. The truck was towed to the police station at 55 Fox Road to be processed. The vehicle contained a number of items including power tools, a generator, and a bicycle. Toronto Police were informed. The investigation continues.
